Coating Repair - general recommendations

  • Damage with an area greater than 7cm2 should be sandblasted to and the substrate prepared as for primary application
  • Minor damage (less than 7cm2 - exposed bare steel) can be mechanically cleaned by abrasive grinding at least to standard with a rough surface profile.
  • Minor damage to the coating surface that is less than 5 cm2 can be repaired by abrasive sanding or if the surface becomes rough.

The adjacent zones along the damaged area should be protected for a minimum of 200 mm and the adjacent areas should be covered, so that during the repair process there is no application of a new layer of coating over the parts that are not damaged. During FLAMEX repair, the fire-retardant coating must not be applied over the areas protected by the top coat.

Notice

This repair procedure covers the following areas:

  • Areas with mechanical damage due to other works
  • Damage caused by welding
  • Damage to the coating caused by welding of additional steel elements
  • Any other damage that results in bare steel
  • Surface damage
  • Damage caused by high humidity, water, trapped air, etc. This results in the formation of bubbles

Damages to the final coating

If only the top coat is damaged, then remove loose damaged parts of the coating and smooth the rough edges. Ensure that the surface is firm, dry and free of dirt before applying the recommended / projected dry film thickness of the top coating.

1.1. Subsequent tests and maintenance

Fire-fighting characteristics of intumescent systems will be in function as long as the integrity of the coating is preserved and there are no signs of material deterioration. Regular inspections of the fire protection system should be carried out. All damaged areas, defects, etc. they must be repaired in accordance with the above recommendations. Project verification intervals should be specified in the specification. It is common for inspections to be carried out every two years after the projected service life / durability of the material (note: durability refers to certain exposure conditions and is specific to each project).

Extraordinary maintenance interventions, e.g.. in case of damage to the fire protection system due to mechanical impact, water adsorption, voluntary removal, etc. , must be reported immediately. When necessary, the top coat must be maintained in a continuous film to protect the FLAMEX from environmental influences. However, the formation of excessive thickness of the top coat can be detrimental to the fire protection system and should be avoided.. As a guideline, it is recommended to apply a maximum of three coats of topcoat, with a dry film thickness of each layer of 20 microns (total thickness should not exceed 70 microns, regardless of how many coats of topcoat are applied).
